NL - Robin Decoster’s artistieke praktijk bevindt zich op het snijvlak van sociale wetenschap en beeldende kunst. Vanuit zijn onderzoek naar de impact van technologie op de maatschappij verkent hij hoe mens, medium en context elkaar wederzijds beïnvloeden in de totstandkoming van betekenis. Fotografie beschouwt hij daarbij niet als een autonoom beeld, maar als een relationeel en contextgebonden proces van waarnemen en interpreteren. Zijn werk vertrekt vanuit een cyclisch proces van kijken, vastleggen en herlezen, waarin beelden fungeren als tijdelijke verankeringen van betekenis die steeds opnieuw worden gevormd door hun omgeving. Fotografie wordt zo zowel een onderzoeksmethode als een artistieke praktijk: een manier om maatschappelijke en historische realiteiten te verkennen en verschuivingen in perceptie zichtbaar te maken. In deze hybride ruimte tussen document en interpretatie nodigt hij de toeschouwer uit tot reflectie.
EN - Robin Decoster’s artistic practice lies at the intersection of social science and visual art. Drawing on his research into the impact of technology on society, he explores how people, medium and context mutually influence one another in the creation of meaning. In this context, he does not regard photography as an autonomous image, but as a relational and context-bound process of observation and interpretation. His work stems from a cyclical process of looking, recording and re-reading, in which images function as temporary anchors of meaning that are constantly reshaped by their surroundings. Photography thus becomes both a research method and an artistic practice: a way of exploring social and historical realities and making shifts in perception visible. In this hybrid space between document and interpretation, he invites the viewer to reflect.
